Murud Janjira BeachMurud beach stands apart from other beaches in Maharashtra. The beach faces west and attracts water-lovers from across the world, who lingers on to catch-hold of each and every moments amidst the greenery, on the sand. The waits all day to watch the magic play of sun since early morning until the ray turns red over the sea. Further the beach also directs the dilapidated forts and the long-drawn daily rituals in the nearby Siddhi Vinayak Temple, Idgah and Datta Mandir.

The speechless Murud beach is the charming destination, where stretches of sand is surrounded on three sides by hills. Rocky outcrops flank it to the north and south, while to the east lies the Murud Town and the hills beyond. The beach is encircled with with attraction of the two-island forts- Janjira and Padmadurg, which can be easily seen during the daylight hours.

The invincible Janjira Fort spreads over 22 cares of land and has 19 towers mounted with cannons and turrets. Kala Bangdi is the largest cannon , which is over 18 ft long and is of immense weight. The fort complex has two impregnable sweet water tank which is still known to be a part of bygone politics here.

Padmadurg fort was commissioned by Sambaji(son of Shivaji)in 17th century. On a rock called Kasa, a mile into the sea. The fort is no more glamorous, yet a visit into it offers the saga of fierce battles between the Siddis and the Marathas. A number of Cannon can be still seen within the crumbling walls.

The sunset here is mesmerizing and visitors can feast their eyes at the beach or up at Idgah, the highest point in Murud. Visitors can reach the rarely used mosque by approaching the 200-odd steps and can also take a turn towards Datta Mandir, located atop a hill to the north of Murud. With standing on both the shrines premises visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Murud Town, masking beneath a green canopy of coconut and areca nut palms.

Murud beach is not meant for adventure water-sports and visitors can only splash the sea-water via swimming or boating in a limited area. The place do not provide swim suit or life guards to swimmers and visitors need to avail the accessories of their own. However, boat-rider can hire sail boats from the fisher-folk at the Rajpuri Jetty.

Murud Beach Shopping
Murud is famous for sweets, coconut chikki and barfi, which are available in the shops near ST Bus Stand or in the market near Siddi Bagh. Hanuman Hotel near the bus stand is also known for its sweets. Travelers can also take home some fishes like surmai, pomfret and prawns.

The spicy Konkani seafood is a can't miss item in Murud. The restaurants in Golden Swan Beach Resort and Sandipur Resort serves the delicious Konkanai food at reasonable price. They also provide a menu of Indian Tandoori and Chinese cuisines. Other stand-alone hotel like Patil KhanavaL, Hotel Vinayak and Hotel Anand Vatika, all near the beach are famous for fish and vegetarian curries. Vendors on the beach, too, offers the mouth-watering batata vada, pakodas, bhel puri, pani puri and coconut juice.

Nandgaon
Nestled 8 kms away from the beach on the Murud-Alibaug Road, this small town is popular for its Siddhi Vinayak Temple. The temple is built over three centuries ago and is one of the sacred place in Maharashtra. Visitors believe to make a holy visit here and while during their tour programme, they can have a majestic view of the tall betel nut plantations the nearby blackish beach. Sightseers can engage themselves with beach cricket and beach walk or can catch hold of the solitary experience.

Garambi
The scenic Garambi is situated 8 kms to the east of Murud and is famous for its perennial spring, which trickles through the laterite rocks. A 100 years old dam constructed here is a part of Victoria Water Works. The spot is treasured with deciduous trees and shrubs which rejuvenates after the monsoon from October to December. Visitors, visiting the place during the time can have fun with viewing the chirping birds and catching the colorful butterflies.

Khokri Tombs
Located 6 kms south-east of Murud on the road to Aagardanda Jetty, Kohri is a small village holding three tombs. They were built in 18th century by the Siddi dynasty of Janjira and now in the 21st century, the tombs are in a state of ruin. Nevertheless, the beautiful structures still specifies the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture.

When to visit Murud-Janjira Beach
Murud-Janjira can be visited throughout the year. The monsoon from mid-June to August is exceedingly beautiful and a visit during the time is worthy enough.

By Air
Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport, situated 167 kms in Mumbai is connected by flights from most Indian and International cities.

By Rail
The nearest railhead, Roha is located on the Konkan Railway and connects Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore etc via regular express train.

By Road
NH17 connects major places like Vadkhal Naka, Karnala, Pen, Alibaug, Poyand etc. to Murud. There are State Transport buses to Murud from Mumbai Central and Borivili.

By Sea
Boats and launches for Mandwa Jetty departs from the Getaway of India in Mumbai. On reaching the port visitors need to traveler 19 kms to Alibaug and then 54 km to Murud.
